Hilma af Klint – Altarpiece No. 2 Inspired Carpet – 180 x 250 cm
Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter and mystic. Predating the abstract works of Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Malevich, af Klint is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstract art in Western art history. Her most ambitious project, “Paintings for the Temple,” consists of 193 works depicting spiritual evolution through geometric forms and symbolic color. Altarpiece No. 2 is one of three monumental altar paintings created for the innermost sanctuary of this imagined temple.
